There are many people that believe what goes around, comes around. If that's the case, Capt. Joe Netti of Corland, NY had his just due when he won the Lake Ontario Counties Spring Trout & Salmon Derby with a 29 pound, six ounce king salmon. Netti, also called "Musky Joe", has long been a supporter of the LOC Derby and each year he donates musky trips for the youth and adult winners. He did that again this year, only he won't be able to fish with himself. Instead, he'll have to sit back and enjoy his $10,000 Grand Prize, a new Fish Hawk temperature probe, a Browning Rod and Reel combo and an assortment of other merchandise prizes.
Netti earned his first-ever LOC win while fishing between Fourmile Creek and Wilson, 42 feet down over a 50 foot bottom. He was trolling a yellow/red Yuk Zipper spoon. He was the eventual winner of the 10 day derby, that saw over 3,000 people register around the lake. The 20th place salmon was 25 pounds, three ounces.
First place in the Salmon Division was Mike George of Niagara Falls with a 28 pound, three ounce fish he caught on a Northern King "bloody nose" Lite spoon while fishing with Capt. Doug Stein aboard the Blue Goose. The Grand Prize youth was caught by Andrew Yaeger of East Amherst. His 26 pound, 11 ounce fish was caught on an R&R spoon off the Niagara Bar. He earned a $300 gift card from Wal-Mart, along with a Musky Joe charter and other merchandise.
First place in the other divisions were as follows: Rainbow/Steelhead winner was Tod Marshall of Fayette City, PA with a 22 pound, seven ounce fish he caught out of Oak Orchard; Joe Parillo of West Springfield, MA took top brown trout honors with an 18 pound, 8 ounce fish caught off Oswego; Larry Lapa of Rochester, fishing with Capt. Jerry Felluca of Rebel Charters, was the top laker with a 23 pound, 12 ounce fish taken on an R&R spoon off the Devil's Nose this side of Rochester.
